茅奕教授的研究领域为宇宙黎明和再电离时代，以及相关的宇宙学探针，如21厘米谱线、莱曼阿尔法森林等，并积极参与国际大型射电实验如平方公里阵列射电望远镜（SKA）的国际合作。他的主要研究手段是理论建模、数值模拟，以及应用机器学习的数据分析手段。

Prof. Yi Mao works mainly on the cosmic dawn and reionization, and their probes such as the 21 cm line, Lyman-alpha forest. He is involved with the international collaboration in the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) experiments. His main research tool is theoretical modeling, numerical and seminumerical simulations, and data analysis with machine learning techniques.
